How can productivity be optimised when workers take many steps every day?
Crown QuickPick® Remote: semi-automated order picking
Crown is one of the pioneers of semi-automated order picking technology. The QuickPick® Remote system is simply efficient. By remotely controlling the truck's movement, the operator significantly reduces the need to climb up and down from the cab, as well as unnecessary walking.
The positive effects are twofold: less fatigue and risk of accidents to the operator, and increased productivity in the picking process. Safety and maintenance of aisle positioning are managed autonomously by the QuickPick® system. The operator can concentrate on his main function: order picking.
Order picking consists of moving around a storage location to pick products stored in different places (addresses) based on a picking list (list on paper, on a PC or via Voice Picking).
The work of the order picker is physical, tiring and causes many musculoskeletal pain issues.
The work done leads to many constraints in terms of productivity, safety and ergonomics:
How can better ergonomics be offered when people carry heavy loads with painful postures?
How can safety be improved when the driver is constantly getting in and out of the cab?
Where can order picking be improved?
Research into picking operations reveals three main categories of tasks performed by the driver: walking, product handling and driving.
By schematising the proportions of each action performed during order picking, it is easier to focus on the areas where the QuickPick® Remote system can bring improvements.
Complete picking cycle
Complete picking cycle with QuickPick Remote
- Walking between the truck and the pallet racks:
- Reduce the distance travelled with loads
- Reduce fatigue
- Offer more time for picking
- Driving on the picking truck:
- Reduce the round trips to the cab
- Reduce the number of times the picker has to step up and down into and out of the cab
The QuickPick® Remote solution
The QuickPick Remote system is a remote control system for the picking truck.
The user wears a glove equipped with a transmitter/receiver and a control button which controls the forward movement of the truck, leaving both hands free for picking.
The truck has a transmitter/receiver which receives the operator's commands while front-mounted lasers, control its position in the aisle and stop the truck if there is an obstacle.
Why does this work?
QuickPick® Remote offers many benefits:
By spending most of his or time near the picking supports (forks), the operator will have covered fewer kilometres at the end of the day: less walking to the driver's cab, less walking while carrying loads and less "negative" walking.
The front lasers and scanner monitor the positioning of the truck in the aisle and stop it if there are obstacles (people, trucks, racks or goods, ...), while front flashing lights warn other people that the truck is on the move.
Even at a distance from the cab, the operator can operate the horn and even stop the truck at a distance if necessary.
More concentration on picking, fewer unneeded movements and picking errors: the picker is less tired and more efficient at picking.
Reduced musculoskeletal problems and fewer work stoppages also contribute to the optimisation of the company's productivity.
Because every business, every organisation, and every person is different, the QuickPick® Remote system is designed to adapt to the needs of the user and not the other way around.
Communication between the truck and the user does not require any investment or IT support. The system is autonomous and does not use the existing network.
The remote control allows truck movements from a few centimetres to several meters, meaning that it can be adapted to each individual or organizational need.
The various modes offer truck positioning on the right, the left, or in the centre of the aisle.
The various control attachments available provide customisation to suit the needs of each user: whether left- or right-handed, whether wearing gloves or not, whether working in positive or negative temperature.
The QuickPick® Remote system is available for the entire Crown GPC3000 line of floor order pickers.
From standard fork elevation to ergonomic fork elevation, with short or long forks.
Even the MPC3000 mast-type order picker and the TC3000 electric tow tractor can benefit from it.
